Meet Darlene

Darlene Cavalier, the founder of SciStarter and Science Cheerleaders, is a ceaseless champion for citizen science and impassioned science promoter. Starting with a blog in 2006, Darlene used her position as a Philadelphia 76er’s Dancer to spark interest in STEM. Her blog grew as she was joined by other science-loving NFL and NBA cheerleaders, leading her to create Science Cheerleaders, a national non-profit that inspires, engages and empowers girls to pursue their STEM dreams. Her next project, SciStarter, grew out of a Master’s project at the University of Pennsylvania, where she explored ways for people without science degrees to meaningfully engage in science. Since 2011, SciStarter has grown into a worldwide citizen science hub that links millions of people with active science research.

Currently, Darlene is a professor of practice at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society and Co-Founder of ASU’s Expert and Citizen Assessment of Science and Technology Consortium. She is also a National Geographic Fellow and Explorer and advises for many organizations on issues of science, education, and policy. She was recently named co-chair of America 250's Innovation, Science, and Entrepreneurism Advisory Council and was appointed as an Honorary Fellow at Southern Denmark University. A graduate of Temple University and of the University of Pennsylvania, she and her family live in Philadelphia, the home base from which she promotes science globally.

Through her dedication to sparking public engagement in science research and education, Darlene embodies the Wagner’s core purpose—to make science accessible to all!

PAST HONOREES

The Louisa Binney Wagner Award

In 2023, The Wagner introduced a new award to recognize individuals who are committed to the Wagner and have significantly contributed to shaping its future. Named for William Wagner’s wife, Louisa, a devoted partner in creating the Institute, we were thrilled to present the inaugural award to Dr. Arlene P. Bennett, a pioneering Philadelphia physician and an extraordinary friend and supporter of the Wagner.

Arlene P. Bennett, Inaugural Louisa Binney Wagner Award

Dr. Arlene Bennett is a physician, psychiatrist, and valued friend of the Wagner. Born in West Philadelphia, Arlene decided to become a doctor at age 9. After a stint in the U. S Air Force as a radio mechanic, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1964—one of only 6 women in her class and the first African American woman. Aside from her long and distinguished medical career, Arlene is deeply engaged in serving her Philadelphia community. She is especially passionate about access to science and learning for everyone, which is what brought her to the Wagner. For nearly three decades, she’s been a vital supporter and advocate for the Wagner’s mission, frequently stewarding support and guiding growth for the Institute. Together with her husband Carl, a past Board member, she was a founding member of the Wagner’s Leidy Society, and has hosted events, served on committees, and offered her wisdom on many aspects of our operations. She is an honorary member of the Wagner family and we are delighted to recognize her with the first Louisa Binney Wagner Award.
